24. individual ideas for title sequence

As a group we presented our individual ideas of what we want our film opening to be. When then came to a conclusion and incorporated two peoples ideas into one. We have chose to do a crime/ teen drama genre.

The idea is that there is a group of four new friends who have met recently at college. Little do they know she's psychotic and is very clingy. She then goes off to do something (i.e goes to the toilet) meanwhile the friends get approached by a girl who warns them about her. Later she comes back looking very suspicious and it come to a realisation that she has an obsession with the group of girls she has now become friends with. When she goes missing with one of them, she becomes the subject of suspense and the other friends seek help from a local police officer who sends detectives to take action.

Initially the majority of this opening would take place within the school canteen or perhaps one of the classrooms and later take place outside or school at police station.
Another location could be at one of the friends houses where they are more likely to seem trapped or isolated. (The idea is that it will begin by taking place inside a building and then move onto a police station or outside where a police officer may be walking by).

Some of the props/ costumes that will be used include:
  • Knives (for the psycho girl)
  • Books and pens/ revision equipment (as the girls could be studying)
  • Phones
  • Earphones
  • Lanyards (if they are at school)
  • Casual clothing (To emphasise the fact they are teenagers) Eg. tops, jeans. shoes socks. earnings, bracelets etc...
  • Police officer uniform
  • Handcuffs
  • Gun (for police officer)

The characters within this opening will be both male and female. The psycho will be a girl whereas the other friends within the group can be a mix of the two genders. The police officer and detective will be male and in their mid 30's maybe let late 20's. Moreover the group of friends as well as the psycho girl will be teenagers aged 16-18.

When it comes to the titles they will be bold to ensure a statement is made. It also connotes the theme of the movie and suggests to the audience that the movie perhaps is going to be intense. The titles will appear as motions that combined into the events taking place within the opening.
Although this may be difficult to do, it is a unique and stylish way of incorporating the titles. It also goes very well with the genre of crime.

The sound in tis opening is going to be very mysterious. This is because it creates suspense and has the audience wondering what is going to happen. This type of sound is captivating and encourages a person to continue to watch as they are eager to find out what is going to happen next. furthermore there will also be some dialogue I this opening. this is to satisfy the audience in terms of what the situation taking place is, as well as, delivering and understanding of what the overall film may be about.

24. Individual ideas for opening sequence

The genre of our opening sequence is a Teen-Crime Drama. This is because it will be easy to distinguish what should be put in a teen drama as everyone in my group is a teenager. Our opening sequence should include around 5 - 7 characters as we need a friendship group to occur with separate sub groups amugst them.

As this film is a Teen-Drama as well as a crime film, the majority of the opening will be shot in a school to convey the idea that these are teenage students going through. However other locations may include a bedroom in which the main character spends her time in.

The story line for this would be how , in a friendship group , although things appear perfect in their friendship and ordinary , what the rest of the characters weren't aware of is that the one girl is trying to be popular and will do anything to get there , even if that means doing crazy dares which turn  her against her friendship group as her friendship start to form the opinion that she is becoming crazy. This can be shown with the credits coming in with a voice of the top going 'Truth or dare' and continuing to laugh and give each other dares whilst images of the school and locations are presented. There will also be 1 second clips of knives and blood to show that something goes wrong throughout this.

When looking at costumes I would put all the characters in the main group in completely different costumes to show individuality and have a couple of them dressed as different phases such as the emo phase or hipster phase , however I would put the 'popular group' in something that matches whether it is through matching colours or clothing items. FurthermoreI would use props such as knives , dead fake birds, fake blood and anything else that matches the theme.

Lastly I would have the titles appear fast and have them over a moving dark background with action and suspence music. These credits would be in a medium size , white print.

Individual idea/ outline for the tittle sequence.

Genre:

My idea of the type of genre i will want to create is teenage drama/crime this is because this type of genre keeps the drama and tension going from start to end which is essential in a tittle sequence. Also, thriller will be productive to do as we can only use what we have in the sixth form so we can do a lot with what we have.

Initial Plot/ Storyline:

The ideas that i have for the storyline is that a group of girls are friends and have just started college they all didn't know each other from secondary so they all meet in college, except one of the girls which knew one of the other girls. This girl knew there was something wrong with the girl and years ago she killed a girl that she called her best friend but months later was found dead on a bus by a passenger.   but the others didn't she always tried to tell them but overtime she did the girl was there. Time goes by and the girl is obsessed with the other girls she wants to always know what their doing and who their with. She threatens their families to spend less time with them but the girls don't know this. How long  can this last and what happens next?

Location:

I will film most of the scenes in the sixth from canteen because it is a teenage drama and the story is mostly set in school it will only make sense to film it in a school environment so the audience can get the full effect from the film.

Tittles:

The tittles i will use are going to be tittles on a blank screen white font minimum size, because i know that the audience will pay attention to the tittles more. Also if i placed the tittles in the background of a scene the audience wont fully watch and understand the scenes.

Key Characters / Costume and props:

The key characters in this sequence will be the four girls but the main character will of course be the obsessive girl. Also a quick appearance will come from the previous girl that she killed but her dead body. The props and costume i will use would be books and folders for the girls to carry to show they are students and a lanyard to show they all attend the same school.

Soundscape:

The sounds that i will put into the sequence would be a school bell, different conversations from kids in the canteen to set the atmosphere and also some nice hip hop music that is later cut off by a tension grabbing sound to show the contrast in moods and genres.

Social groups:

mean girls lacey chabert gretchen weiners
The types of social groups that will be introduced will be teenage peer groups.

Evaluation - gone girl

Evaluation - Gone girl:

Image result for gone girl
  • Whilst noting down each shot it was quite basic, although as a group we struggled to story board. Throughout the duration of making the storyboard we found it quite difficult due to the lack in time in class.
  • We included similar locations of the title sequence to match one another, e.g. the houses located near the college, also for the use of costume we used gloves for the husband to wear whilst stroking the wife's hair.
  • It was quite easy to create the title credits once being shown by the technician, we made quick and precise decisions on the font type, typeface and size of titles which is most suitable to the title sequence my group and i were analyzing (Gone girl), it was mainly slow paced and the credits calmly dissolved into the next credit in that same way.
  • Lastly if were to complete this task again i would choose a different title sequence with more going on around it, also including more shot types and a variety of areas to shoot which are similar to the titles sequence of choice.

Shot by Shot Evaluation

Evaluation:

Writing down every shot in the sequence was very easy because it mostly consisted of wide shots or close ups. However, the making of the storyboard was a bit difficult because there wasn't much detail on the drawings as we couldn't really draw the pictures accurately.

For location, we used the school sixth form and it had a bit of an impact because it didn't look like a block of flats as it was in the sequence. Also, the costume we used was a glove for the husband to wear as he stroked his wife's hair.

Creating the tittle credits were very hard as we had to find the section in the editing computer that does it, then we had to find a font and size that we thought fitted into the shot. When deciding the font we had to take into consideration that we didn't want the viewers to be distracted from the scene by looking at the writing so we didn't make it that big and fancy.
The font choice was very successful because it came out clear and didn't take the audiences attention off the sequence. It did suit the tone of the film because it was slow paced and the credits slowly dissolved into the next credit in that same way.
With the positioning of the credits we did a good job because we placed it in different parts for different shots as we put it in a place where we know was the centre of attention, also we made sure every credit was fitted onto the screen and could be clearly seen.
Finally, if i were to do this task again i would personally choose another sequence as i think this one didn't have a lot of context for my group to work with in comparison to other sequences.

Genre shortlist

Horror: This type of genre is would be one that i would choose because its very captivating and it keeps the audience fully engaged on whats happening

Comedy: This would also be in mind because this genre can apply to everyone as long as adult humour is incorporated.

Action: Lastly i would think of action because it takes the audience through a journey and always has amazing cliff hangers that make a tittle sequence that much more entertaining.

22. practical remake evaluation

When in the process of filming our title sequence I found filming the shots easy as I was familiar with the shots being used, they were fairly easy shots. As well as this, storyboarding was easy as we knew the shots we wanted. However the drawings wasn't our strongest point and also we were running out of time.

The location outside was lightly similar to the one in the real title sequence for gone girl. For example the shots of the houses and buildings in and near the college. We used gloves of the costumes to make it clear to the audience who the male character in ur sequence is.

When it can to editing it was fairly putting the shots together however, we faced some difficulties when it came to adding the sound mainly adding in the credits.  We ended up only putting in three credits and all of them had different fonts. The reason for this is because we go slightly confused with how to edit the credits with the animations so we had to add them on the simple way. We also kept forgetting the name of the font we was using so all the credits look different. Moreover, we also ended up running out of time so everything seemed rushed.
In my opinion the credits do not suit the tone of the film. This is as they are random and don't really make sense. The placement of the credits on the other hand were great. They were not all placed in one place which is very similar to the actual title sequence.

If was to complete this task again I think the main thing to improve is our time management. We were either working too fast or too low. I think perhaps changing the opening we chose. This is because it would give us a chance to use a variety of different shots as the ones used in the Gone girl title sequence opening were to basic and repeated.

16. why sound is important.

Sound is very important to a film. This is because without it the is lack of understanding. It can also be boring which can lead to a loss of attention. On the other  having sound in a film opening can make it seem interesting and much easier to understand. It makes it exciting and gives the audience a reason to keep watching.

Sound: vibrations that travel through the air or another medium and can be heard when they reach a persons ear.

Soundscape: a piece of music considered in terms of its component sounds. it creates a layer of music.

Suspending disbelief: willingness to suspend ones critical faculties and believe the unbelievable; sacrifice of realism and logic for the sake of enjoyment.

Wild track: a sound recording for a movie that is made without the camera running at the same time.

Diegetic: sound that is natural within filming.

Non-diegetic: sound that is not natural within filming. for example music playing in the background or a voiceover.

Voiceover: a piece of narration in a film or broadcast, not accompanied by an image of the speaker

Dialogue: a conversation between two or more people as a feature of a book, play or film.

Foley: relating to the addition of record sound effects after the shooting of a film.

Sound Bridge: sounds that can lead in or out of a film.

sound is very important to film as it sets the tone. It illustrates the theme of the movie and gives a slight suggestion to what is likely to take place. As well as this, sound is important as it creates an understanding of what the movie is about and what events are taking place. It enables the audience to identify the situations taking pace in more depth (i.e. through dialogue).

22. Pratical remake activity

Evaluation:

I personally found it easy to take down the shots when watching the clips as I had previously studied them making it easier to identify the shots , however our group found the story board hard due to the fact that we attempted to start online and it didn't work therefore we had to do it via paper but in little time meaning that we didn't have enough time to finish it. I personally believe that the location that we chose was good as it had conveyed similarities between the real production and the remake of the production and we were able to keep most the shots the same. The only costume we had was the use of a glove and that was to identify the 'male' character as been a male role as the role was played by a female therefore it was effective as it allowed the audience to pick out the similarities.
The title sequence was fairly easy to create however we managed to lose track of time and didn't have enough time to put in all the animated titles and therefore had to use simple titles in order to make sure that we had some.    FINISH TALKING ABOUT THE EDITING

If I were to do this again I would probably  change the film that we chose as there wasn't very much to film and there wasn't any physical dialogue therefore making it harder to find length

22. practical remake

The importance of sound in a film:

  • What is sound?
Sound is a vibration that propagates as a typically audible wave (what you hear).
  • What is a soundscape?
A piece of music considered in terms of its component sounds.
  • What is sound design?
The process of specifying audio elements - includes film making, radio, TV production, etc.
  • What is "suspending disbelief"?
A willingness to suspend ones critical faculties and to believe the unbelievable.

  • Throughout many films the main soundtrack is comprised of three essential ingredients:
  1. The human voice
  2. Sound effects
  3. Music

13. Target audience research.

Tasks 1

What is an audience ?
An audience is an assembled sectors or listeners at a public event.

How do we define target audience?
An audience/ target audience is a select group of potential costumers, which a business decides to aim its marketing and advertising strategies at in order to sell a product or service.

Why is it useful for a film to have a target audience ?
Useful as it allows the producers to know what context to put in to the blog.

Which audience do you think different genres appeal to ?
I think Females are more attracted to Romatic or crime films where as males are more attracted to Action and sports movies. On the other hand i feel as if the elderly are more attracted to historian film as well as family films whereas i feel as if teenagers and mid adults are more attracted to horror films and action films.

Survey analysis

Task 2: Interview

Although my family refused to be on camera , I was able to write down what they said in order to get a better understanding of how age and gender can effect what films you enjoy. To start off with , I interviewed my Brother , whom is 14, and it turns out that he enjoys comedies as they're more interesting to watch in his opinion. Next I interviewed my grandma who said she enjoys to watch family films and Romantic films as they make her feel something. Lastly I interviewed my younger cousin who is 5 and she likes anything that is animated because of the colours and its funny.

Task 3 :

Which 3 genres do audiences prefer ?
Comedy , Crime and action

What reason did they give for the preference?
Crime : Audience can engage with it and is interesting
Comedy : Actors that the audience love and are used to and it's fun to watch.

Do similar audience groups like the same film genres ?
Yes females tend to enjoy romcoms more and musicals where as male enjoy action and comedy first.

Which film genres do you think you would prefer to make and based on this research who would be your target audience.
Personally I would like to make a teen drama as they are really fun to watch and I feel like there aren't enough for teenagers. This would be targeted towards people around 14-21 as it will have jokes that are directed towards them.

18. Genre Shortlists

Three genres that I would like to do for my own production are :

  • Crime - This is because they're full of mystery and are great for engaging the audience as they are full of suspension and tension and can sometimes require audience participations. Examples include Now You See Me and Gone Girl.
  • Action - This is because they keep the audience on edge and they create an unrealistic version of life. Examples of this include James Bond and The Maze Runner.
  • Horror - This is because it's easy to add effects and also they're fun to watch for the audience as the audience never know what to suspect as they never know what is coming up.

19. Practical remake activity. Evidence of planning

16. Why is sound so important to film?

Why is sound so important to film ?

Sound is said to be important as 'It makes up 50% of the film' according to most directors. When watching the clip above of dead pool you see that the film is more effective when having sound rather than not as when watching without sound , you aren't as drawn in meaning that you are easily distracted and aren't as focused in it due to losing interests , however when watching this with sound , as we are more engage , we enjoy it more and more tension is created with the effect of sound.  Sound is known to set the mood and atmosphere and also to emphasise reality.

There are 4 different types of sound and these consist of :

  • Sound in media - Something that we can hear
  • Sound scape- The wider scene / a piece of music considered in terms of its component sounds, creating layering in a film's audio/overall piece
  • Sound design - The process of specifying acquiring manipulating or generating audio elements.
  • Suspending disbelief - the sacrifice of realism and logic for the sake of enjoyment

12.BFI film forever

Why is sound so important in a film?

What is sound? Vibrations that travel through the air or another medium and can be heard when they reach a persons ear.
What is a soundscape? A piece of music considered in terms of its sound components.
What is sound design? The process of specifying acquiring manipulating or generating audio elements.
What is 'suspending disbelief'? Willingness to suspend one's critical faculties and believe the unbelievable.
Sound is so important in a film because it adds to the effect that the film is trying to get across to the audience, for example in a horror movie normally when something is going to jump out and scare us it goes completely quite so we can get the full effect or a jingle is played. This adds to the scariness to the film. However, in a action film, when drums and base music is played this is normally when a fighting scene is going to kick off this is also done to add to the ruff violence effect the film wants. Furthermore, sound makes a tittle sequence much more fun to watch.
Lastly, sound is a way the film can communicate with the audience as they know when certain things are coming and also in some way what genre it is because when you here up beat, happy music you instantly would know this isn't a horror and is most likely a comedy or animation.
