16. Why is sound so important to film?

Why is sound so important to film ?

Sound is said to be important as 'It makes up 50% of the film' according to most directors. When watching the clip above of dead pool you see that the film is more effective when having sound rather than not as when watching without sound , you aren't as drawn in meaning that you are easily distracted and aren't as focused in it due to losing interests , however when watching this with sound , as we are more engage , we enjoy it more and more tension is created with the effect of sound.  Sound is known to set the mood and atmosphere and also to emphasise reality.

There are 4 different types of sound and these consist of :

  • Sound in media - Something that we can hear
  • Sound scape- The wider scene / a piece of music considered in terms of its component sounds, creating layering in a film's audio/overall piece
  • Sound design - The process of specifying acquiring manipulating or generating audio elements.
  • Suspending disbelief - the sacrifice of realism and logic for the sake of enjoyment
