Target audience research Activity

Task 1: What is a target audience. 

An audience are assembled spectators or listeners at a public event such as a play, film, concert or meeting. A target audience is a particular group at which a product such as a film or advertisement is aimed. This is very useful to have in a film because they will be the type of people that will be watching your film, so they must be recognised earlier on because they will determine the context of your film. I think that for example elderly people would apply to the more historical and factual genres, but in comparison teenagers would normally apply to the school dramas and horror genres. 

Task 2: Researching target audiences. 

I created a questionnaire and the questions consisted of what film genres people are into, what character they like to see and the reasons why they like them specific genres. The results were that all the people that were 40+ like Sci-fi, films based in a county side and liked watching film based on families. However, i also noticed how the people aged 15-22 liked to watch horror and teenaged drama films, and they liked films that'll have villains and fighting in it. 

Task 2 part B: Interviews 

To understand target audiences a bit more, i took individual interviews of my mother and asked her what type of films she likes to watch and why she likes to watch them her answer was she likes to watch historical films about her home country she said she finds this interesting because it educates her on her home country and gives her information that she can pass onto us.
However, in contrast when i interviewed my brother who is 23 and a lot younger than my mum of course, he said he likes to watch films like: 21 jump street, conjuring, Brotherhood, and fast and furious. The difference is huge.
Then, lastly i interviewed my sister who is 18 which said she likes to watch films like: the purge, Tyler perry's Why did i marry you? and Creed. She said that she found the storylines of all these films interesting especially Tyler perry Why did i marry you? because the drama carried on throughout the film also it was about a wife and husband having a divorce and she said these types of dramas intrigue her.

Task 3: What film genres do audiences prefer?

The 3 genres audiences prefer are are horror, comedy and Drama.

The reasons given for there preferences were that because they are 18 year olds they are more interested and find comedy and horror more fun and exiting to watch in comparison to Sci-Fi which was more appealing to the more older people because they find factual things more useful and knowledgeable. 

All similar audience groups do like the same genres because most people over 40 did like romantic films more than the teenagers that preferd the horror and comedy genre because it gives them adrenaline rush. 

I would prefer to make a comedy because i know that it would be able to apply to teenage audiences and also i think i could switch it up and put some adult humour so it can apply to all audiences.
